"My three pieces of advice for young professions are: (1) don’t be afraid to try something new; (2) mistakes are inevitable, but make sure you learn from them; and (3) ensure that you have the following five people in your corner: cheerleader, coach, mentor, peer, and friend."

Q&A with Participant:

  1. Describe your current position.
  2. I oversee development and implementation of City policies and programs. I also monitor, advocate, and implement State and Federal legislation.

  3. What is your educational background?
  4. I received a BA in Communications from Saint Mary’s College of California and a Certificate in Land Use and Environmental Planning from UC Davis Extension.

  5. What do you love about your career?
  6. My career affords me different challenges, opportunities, and experiences. I see our positive impact on the community, particularly the underserved/underrepresented populations.

  7. Do you incorporate your queer identity in your career? How?
  8. I incorporate my queer identity into my career through transparency and authenticity. I also lead a County-wide initiative to enhance workplace diversity and inclusion and address our inherent biases.

  9. Have you ever had a negative experience in a professional environment that was related to your queer identity? How did you deal with it?
  10. Fortunately, I have not encountered negative professional environment experiences due to my queer identity. Acceptance of self and positive attitudes generally result in professional interactions.

  11. What role has mentorship played in your career? Do you have a queer mentor?
  12. I am fortunate to have multiple mentors that are allies of LGBTQ+ community. My mentors are open, inclusive, strong sounding boards, listen, provide guidance rather than direction, and are passionate about their career/colleagues.
